LATCHKEY KIDS

The familiar sight of children shuffling down the street and school bus lights flashing is now upon us. For many parents with school age children, this is a time to start re-scheduling to prepare for the day to day changes in family life that take place when the kids go back to school.

Today an estimated one third of all school aged children between the ages of five and thirteen are so-called latchkey children, kids who care for themselves while their parents are at work.

Every child is different, so taking into consideration the maturity and personality of your child, a parent should explore all options available. Assuming alternatives to self-care have been considered, and ruled out, here are some good pointers for families with latchkey kids...

Ø      Practice good parent-child communication. Discuss routines and schedules, teach them how to answer the phone without letting callers know they are alone, practice what to do in the event of an emergency, important phone numbers, etc.

Ø      Teach responsibility. Play “what if’ games. What if the power went out, What if someone didn’t come home on time, etc.

Ø      Find out about support services. Block parents, neighbours, etc.

Ø      Use your security system to it’s full potential. Alarms can be designed to turn on while you are at home, as well as away. Portable panic pendants can be tied into many systems. Some alarms can be programmed with a “latchkey” feature, so that a parent receives a signal on a pager if the kids have not entered the house by a certain time, and/or when they do come and go.

OUR CHILDREN’S SAFETY IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY!

DID YOU KNOW?

Your alarm system communicates to the monitoring station over your telephone line. Cellular back up is now available in case regular telephone service should fail when you need it most. For more information, please contact one of our sales representatives.

Your Keyholder List
Up To Date?

Help us provide you with the service you deserve by making sure your monitoring details and other account information are kept up to date.

Forgetting to add new users, neglecting to update keyholder telephone numbers, failing to provide keys to keyholders are only a few of the occurrences that make it difficult for us to provide you with the service you need and deserve. Also, please make sure that all of your system’s users know their passcodes and have received adequate training on its use.

If you have not updated your account information in a while and are unsure as to whether it is up to date, please call us at (705) 673-8181. We will be happy to review the existing information and to make any required changes. For the quickest service please call us during non-peak hours which are from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or after 9:30 p.m.

Helping Others
You care deeply for your family and have invested in an alarm system to protect them. Maybe you have family and friends who care just as deeply for their families but who have yet to learn all of the benefits of having a monitored fire and burglar alarm.

Give us the names of these people and for each of them who purchases a system within six months of your referral, you will receive three months worth of free monitoring. If you prefer, you can have them call us directly, but in order to enjoy your free monitoring please make sure that they tell us that you referred them.

If after we’ve spoken to your friends and/or family they decide that they are not interested in a system we will leave them as friends. No uncomfortable situations. No pressure. We will be happy to know that one more person has the knowledge required to make an informed decision about the security of their home or business. Some of our clients provide us with so many names that they rarely pay for the monitoring of their system. Call and ask one of our representatives about our “Cash for Caring” program.
