True Steel Security has
announced a new alliance with “Our Children, Our Future” whose mission is “to
work in partnership with individuals, families, groups and organizations to
develop and promote innovative and sustainable community resources that nurture
healthy children, healthy families and healthy communities.” The goal of
the alliance is to make homes and communities safer and more secure. At the
heart of the alliance is an education campaign, “Security Is A Family Matter,”
aimed at reducing child abuse and other root causes of criminal behaviour.

Security is a Family Matter
26%
of children who are abused or neglected become delinquents. 13% of all violence
can be linked to earlier child treatment. Turbulent child-parent relationships
and lack of intimacy are factors in the profile of a potentially dangerous
child. In response to these statistics, we have partnered with “Our Children,
Our Future”, a local agency that is dedicated to supporting families. Together
we believe that Healthy Children = Healthy Families = Healthy Communities.
“Our
security systems are a great answer to combating the symptoms of unhealthy
families” said John Whitehead, General Manager of True Steel Security. Those
symptoms are juvenile delinquency resulting in break and enter, theft, and
vandalism. “But as a member of this community we want to make a bigger
difference…a more permanent difference. We want to address the root of the
problem, not just the symptoms. We want to help parents build a secure and
loving home for their children. We want to help them raise nutured, competent
children. Our goal is to reduce child abuse and other root causes of criminal
behaviour.” Parent education and support
are a key part of the Security Pro campaign.
For example, the Security Pro web site at
www.securitypro.com includes excerpts from Meld’s “Hands On Help” series of
practical tips for parents. Topics include how to avoid mealtime madness, the
benefits of visitation for parents and kids, child support: rights and
responsibilities, and choosing children’s books, among several others.
The Our Children, Our
Future/Security Pro connection makes sense, given Our Children, Our Future’s
history of success with families. They have helped thousands of parents in our
community make positive changes in their lives that directly impact on their
children, our future!
“It’s not enough to merely detect crime,” said John Whitehead.
”We’re in this business to help reduce crime.
I have never seen a campaign and resource
center that has more to offer to parents, educators and the public safety
community than “Security Is A Family Matter.” We are incorporating the entire
concept into our business strategy.”

Security Is Not Just A Matter Of Technology
As
Security Proâ
dealers, we know that home security systems make a difference—that’s why we’re
in the business of installing high-quality alarm systems that electronically
monitor for intrusion, fire, medical emergencies and environmental threats. But
we also know that security is more than locks, sensors and sirens. Security is
personal. It comes from a sense of belonging and from feeling valued
by others. A child’s first sense of belonging occurs in his or her
family, and that’s why we believe that when you come right down to it, security
is a family matter.
We know what happens when a child doesn’t feel welcome
or valued. Such children suffer from a variety of disorders. It’s well
documented that such children are more likely to become juvenile delinquents and
adult criminals.
1.
Twenty-six per cent of children who are abused or neglected become
delinquents. (Prevent Child Abuse America, 2001)
2.
According to the National Institute of Justice, 13% of all violence can
be linked to earlier child maltreatment. (Prevent Child Abuse America, 2001)
3.
The National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime lists these family
characteristics as factors in the profile of a potentially dangerous child:
Turbulent parent-child relationships, access to weapons, lack of intimacy, no
limits on children’s behaviour or monitoring of TV and the Internet.
4. In 1999, an estimated 1,401 children died as a result of child abuse and
neglect, nearly four children every day. (Prevent Child Abuse America, 2001)
5.
As many as one in six teens admits there are places where they never feel
safe, such as walking to and from a friend’s house or on public transportation.
(Harris Poll, 1995)
6.
Contrary to what many people think, the highest time for violent juvenile
crime is not at night but between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., the after-school hours when
millions of young people are left on their own. (National Crime Prevention
Council)
7.
Eighty-five percent of people who become involved in serious violence by
age 27 report that their first act occurred between age 12 and 20. (National
Youth Survey)
8. One-half of all Americans believe child abuse and neglect is the most
important public health issue facing their country, compared to other issues
like drug and alcohol abuse, heart disease, cancer, and HIV/AIDS. (Prevent Child
Abuse America, 2001)
In response to these
facts, we have partnered with “Our Children, Our Future”, a local agency that is
dedicated to supporting families. Together we believe that Healthy Children =
Healthy Families = Healthy Communities. Our security systems are a great
answer to combating the symptoms of unhealthy families. Those symptoms are
juvenile delinquency resulting in break and enter, theft, and vandalism. But as
a member of this community we want to make a bigger difference…a more permanent
difference. We want to address the root of the problem, not just the symptoms.
We want to help parents build a secure and loving home for their children. We
want to help them raise nurtured, competent children. Our goal is to reduce
child abuse and other root causes of criminal behaviour.
