Beyond VCR

This new DSR-2000e digital recorder is a great way for you to take advantage of digital technology and leave VCRs behind. The DSR is the first true VCR replacement. It looks, feels and operates just like a VCR, but with all the advantages of digital recording. It has the same basic controls as a VCR. The DSR is designed to easily replace a VCR in an existing CCTV system. This guide shows you how to quickly integrate a DSR in to your existing security system.

Match Your Application

Integrate the DSR into your existing security system. If you are using a VCR and:

• One camera and one monitor - Just make the connections and program the time/date, record speed and record schedule.

• A switcher - Make a note of the dwell times being used on the switcher. Then make the connections and program the time/date, record speed and record schedule. Make sure the record speed you program is the same as the dwell time, or higher.

• A quad - If you have a two-output quad, use the .Quad only. or .Standard . output to connect to the DSR. whichever you were using with the VCR. Make the rest of the connections and program the time/date, record speed and record schedule. If you're using sequence mode, note the dwell times and be sure the record speed you choose is the same as the dwell time, or higher.

• A multiplexer - Check your multiplexer brand. It must be a Kalatel Calibur, Philips, Sanyo, Pelco Genex,Robot, ATV, Dedicated Micros, Navco or Hi-Tron model. Then make the connections and program the  time/date, record speed and record schedule. In addition, you'll program the DSR for your multiplexer's protocol

Installing The DSR-2000e

The DSR-2000e has the same basic connections as a VCR, so installation is simple. The DSR also has additional connections to take advantage of features not available on VCRs, such as remote viewing over Ethernet and digital archiving.

Replacing The VCR

Connect Video In: Disconnect the video input from the VCR and connect it to the video input on the DSR-2000e.

Connect Video Out: Disconnect the video output from the VCR and connect it to the video output on the DSR-2000e.

Connect VEXT: Disconnect the VEXT pulse connector from the VCR and connect it to pin 5 on the printed circuit board supplied with the DSR-2000e. Then connect the printed circuit board to the I/O input on the rear panel of the DSR-2000e.

• Connect Audio (Optional): If the VCR was recording audio, disconnect audio input/outputs from the VCR and connect them to the DSR's audio input/outputs.

• Power: Connect the 12V power adapter to the DSR, then plug the power adapter into the wall.

Additional Connections

The following are optional connections for the advanced features not found on VCRs.

• Ethernet Port: The Ethernet port enables the DSR to be connected to a network, allowing authorized uses to view, download, and distribute video images from a remote PC.

• SCSI Port: The SCSI port allows you to connect an archiving device such as a Kalatel DVSe, or a RAID, DAT or CD.

RS-232 Serial Port: Use this port to flash upgrade the DSR's software, or plug in a modem for a PSTN connection.

DSR Menu Programming

Adjust Multiplexer To VCR View

To begin programming the menu system, set the multiplexer to VCR View (or equivalent) mode, this will allow you to see the video output from the DSR.

Navigating the Menu System

• Use the Shuttle (outer dial) to navigate through the menu system.

• Use the Jog (inner dial) to change the values of selected parameters.

• Use the Enter button to confirm a selection in the menu system.

• Use the Menu button to exit a menu without making any changes.

Setting The Time & Date

The Time/Date menu is accessible from the main menu. Use it to specify:

• The time format

• The date format

• The time

• The date

Set the Time Format

1 From the main menu, select Time/Date - Set Time Format. Press Enter.

2 Select the desired time format.

3 To confirm the selection and exit the menu, press Enter.

4 To exit the menu without making any changes, press Menu.

Set the Time

1 From the main menu, select Time/Date . Set Time. Press Enter.

2 HH MM SS will be highlighted. Press Enter to move the highlight to the row of numbers.

3 Enter the time in hours, minutes, and seconds. Use the Jog to change the values. Use the Shuttle to navigate among the three fields.

4 Press Enter to confirm the selection.

5 To save changes and exit the menu, select [OK], then press Enter.

To exit the menu without making changes, select [CANCEL], then press Enter.

Set the Date Format

1 From the main menu, select Time/Date - Set Date Format. Press Enter.

2 Select the desired date format.

3 To confirm the selection and exit the menu, press Enter. To exit the menu without making any changes, press

Menu.

Set the Date

1 From the main menu, select Time/Date - Set Date. Press Enter.

2 Enter the date in months, days, and years. The day of the week will update automatically. Use the Jog to change the values. Use the Shuttle to navigate among the three fields.

3 Press Enter to confirm the selection.

4 To save changes and exit the menu, select [OK], then press Enter. To exit the menu without making changes, select [CANCEL], then press Enter.

The Record Settings menu is accessible from the main menu. It will be used in this application to specify:

• The record speed during normal recording

• The record picture quality

Configuring The Record Settings

Set the Normal Record Speed

1 From the main menu, select Record Setting - Normal Record Speed. Press Enter.

2 Select the desired normal record speed in pictures per second. Note that when the normal record speed is set to 0.0, the unit will only record while an alarm is active.

3 To confirm the selection and exit the menu, press Enter.

4 To exit the menu without making any changes, press Menu.

Set Video Quality

1 From the main menu, navigate to Record Settings - Video Quality. Press Enter.

2 Select the desired record quality:

High, Med, or Low.

Enter the Advanced Menu

1 From the main menu, select Advanced Menu. Press Enter. The Password Box will appear.

2 Enter the advanced menu password. Use the Jog to select a character, then press Enter to complete the selection and move to the next character.

3 After selecting the last character, press Enter. This will complete the password selection process and display the Advanced Menu.

Select the Disk Overwrite Mode

1 From the advanced menu, select Disk Overwrite Mode. Press Enter.

2 Select the desired overwrite mode.

3 To confirm the selection and exit the menu, press Enter. To exit the menu without making any changes, press

Menu.

Select the Multiplexer Format

1 From the advanced menu, select Multiplexer Format. Press Enter.

2 Use the jog to select the desired multiplexer format. If the unit is not connected to a multiplexer, select None.

3 To confirm the selection and exit the menu, press Enter. To exit the menu without making any changes, press Menu.

Multiplexer Mode of Operation

Ensure that the multiplexer is in the correct mode for multiplexed viewing and recording. To verify proper functionality, record and play back on the DSR-2000e according to the manual or quick start guide.

Disk Overwrite Mode & Multiplexer Format

There are a vast number of benefits to replacing a VCR with a DSR-2000e. There are the obvious benefits of digital recording such as longer record times, auto-overwriting of old data, and easier searching. In addition to that, there is digital video archiving using devices such as the DVSe, and remote Ethernet access to recorded video on both the DSR and the DVSe.
